Keyboards help MRSA spread in Hospitals

A study by Dr Gary Noskin of Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago, shows that keyboards and other computer equipment used in hospitals can aid the spread of “superbug” such as MRSA.

Merely touching a keyboard is enough to pick up bacteria such as MRSA, which could easily be passed onto vulnerable patients. Plus due to the design of normal keyboards found in hospitals, typical keyboard cleaning procedures are not practical to remove the bacteria.
In response to rising concerns about hospital acquired infections, Data Clean in conjunction with iKey have developed a series of cleanable medical keyboards and mice solutions.

These medical keyboards and medical mice are designed to reduce cross contamination in hospital environments. The new liquid-proof keyboards feature low-profile silicon rubber keys that can withstand bleach cleaning, and are easily sprayed or wiped down for complete disinfection.
For low-light environments, the keyboards are conveniently backlit. They are ideal for Operating rooms(OR’s), patient rooms, carts, Intensive Care Units (ICU’s) and retractable workstations.

Medical standard keyboards are now available for purchase from our on-line store

We can clean the following equipment

1) Guide to doing a Surface Clean of Your Keyboard

  • Turn off your computer
  • Unplug your keyboard
  • Holding the keyboard over your bin, turn it upside and shake it. Shake from side to side and then shake in a back and forth motion
  • Still keeping the keyboard upside over your bin, tilt it to the left and shake and then tilt it to the right and shake.
  • Place the edge of the keyboard on your table, then use your can of compressed air to blow any remaining debris from underneath your keys.
  • Place the keyboard flat on the desk and using the swabs to clean the keys.
  • Now use the cleaning wipes to wipe the entire keyboard.
  • Using the lint free cloth, wipe down the keyboard
  • You should now have a clean keyboard
  • 2) Deep Clean – for standard keyboard only (not laptop keyboards)

  • Still keeping the keyboard upside over your bin, tilt it to the left and shake and then tilt it to the right and shake.
  • Take a digital photograph of your keyboard, making sure you can clearly read all the keys (so you can put them back in the right position later on).
  • Using the small flat head screw gently leverage one of the keys off, we recommend starting with the ALT key
  • Once all the keys are off, you can wipe down and clean the main keyboard section using the wipes and then drying it with the lint free cloth
  • Once the keys have been removed, you can also begin cleaning each key individually using the wipes and then drying the lint free cloth.
  • Once the keys have been cleaned you can now start replacing the keys onto the keyboard, using the digital picture that you took before you started.
  • Some Notes

Guide to Air-Dusters & Keyboard Cleaning

We at Data Clean Europe spend a lot of our time cleaning computer equipment such as:

    • Servers
    • Keyboards
    • Telephones
    • PC’s
    • Computer Screens
    • Printers
    • Photocopiers
    • Fax Machines
    • Mobile Phones

As all of these items have become an integral part of our life, so it is inevitable that a rapid build up of dust, dirt and germs can occur.

All of these electronic items can break down due to the build up of dust and dirt inside its casing and you the operator of the equipment can be infected by the germs sitting on the surface of the equipment.

Another problem is that equipment like keyboards and mobile phones while robust and hard wearing cannot be cleaned using traditional methods like a warm soapy cloth. In fact it is recommend that no electronic equipment is cleaned with water.

Instead you should use canned air, computer wipes and swabs.
The majority of people who have used canned air will have used a disposal can with a thin straw like nozzle, the problem with this type of can is that while using it you have to keep the can in an upright position, otherwise the propellant comes out of the can in a liquid form which can damage your delicate electronic equipment.

BUT the second problem is that in order to reach some places with the canned air you need to tilt the can to gain access, which means you either don’t clean certain parts of the equipment or you run the risk of damaging it with propellent.
This is why we at Data Clean Europe use the Dust-Off Plus canned air / air duster.

The advantage of the Dust-Off Plus air-duster is that it has an innovative application nozzle that can be rotated 360 degrees, meaning you can reach all parts of your equipment and not spill any propellent on your equipment.

As you can see from this picture, full access without tilting is possible

You can also buy re-fill cans of Dust-Off Plus and even buy replacement nozzles / valves for the Dust-Off Plus.
